I’m Lily Vaughn.

Well actually, Lily Vaughn-McKinna.

By now, you know my Bootscootin’, apparel-designing-daughter, Roxy Rae. And you might also remember I’m recently divorced from Roxy’s dad Steve Vaughn, a globe-trotting gigolo who runs a fashion empire on the scale of Salma Hyak’s husband, Francois-Henri Pinault. What Francois does with French luxury brands like Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci, my ex does with Italian luxury brands.

I must say, during the years I was Mrs. Vaughn, I learned to run a cutting-edge, dynamite-and-then-some fashion empire, and I’ve now built the same for my daughter’s Raeve Boutiques. Think of us like the Vaughn version of the Kardashian’s Dash stores. I’m Roxy’s business manager, AKA the Kris Kardashian of my daughter’s international fashion empire.

But this isn’t my only job...or what they call a gig out here in LA.

I’m also a member of The Mom Squad, a slightly older version of Charlie’s Angels, who fights international crime along-side one of Roxy’s BFFs and Hollywood stylist to the stars, Zoey Witherspoon.

Actually, we fight crime with Zoey, now the Duchess of Caserta, and her husband the Duke of Caserta, Prince Roman Bellesconi Umberto-Vittorio Emanuele Vanvitelli of the Royal House of Savoy.

And yeah, what a mouth-full, right?

But anyhoo...

Why aren’t you reading about the Duke and Duchess or their Bootscootin’ BFFs?

Well, trust me, we Mom Squad Members cause plenty of our own mayhem.

Take my brother Wayne McKinna, for example. Wayne is waaay over his older-guy-but-still-perfectly-fit head and body, and in super-deep Dutch with the Hollywood mob, thanks to another Mom Squad wanna-be...our Aunt Dodie.

So with the Duke and Duchess on stand-by, ready to assist as soon as my stubborn brother admits he needs them, we’re hunting down the Hollywood mob.

Here’s the scoop...

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

As I stood in the doorway to my brother’s office, I still couldn’t imagine him behind Uncle Lewis’ dark cherry desk. But there he was. Wayne McKinna...in his Southern Cal, golden boy flesh.

Okay...back-up a minute.

I suppose I can’t ignore the obvious. Now that Wayne and I are both in our late 60’s, I suppose he looks more like the dashing and mysterious Sir Sean Connery in his legendary Louis Vuitton ad.

Golden Boy or Sir Connery, either way, Wayne was trying to get comfortable in Uncle Lewis' leather chair. He tipped back the chair then kicked up his legs but couldn’t seem to let them relax over the edge of the desk.

I knew he was craving his beat-up metal desk with the perfectly etched coffee rings, not the slick, cool glass that covered Uncle Lewis' pricey antique collector’s piece.

Wayne just didn't belong in this decorator-perfect room, marking up the rugs and the once clean surface of Uncle Lewis’ desk too, with his old, chipped coffee cup. The usual streams of messy spills were now sloshing over the top and running down the sides.

Hell, he didn't belong here period!

Nothing about Deville 1300 Inc, a manufacturer and distributor of ladies' intimate accessories, was related to my brother. Or to me. Except the owners.

Childless, Uncle Lewis and Aunt Dodie had always looked after us with great pride. There were no boundaries to their affections. For that reason, they’d been kind enough to allow Wayne to set-up this farce of a job in order to accomplish the objectives of his real occupation.

But honestly, Aunt Dodie also thrived on helping Wayne with his career as a private investigator. She did have the eye, actually the nose, for his line of work. And on many occasions, she had helped him find the missing pieces of cases that had, up to that point, eluded him.

In fact, it was her good-natured meddling that was simultaneously indispensable and irritating as hell.

But despite our closeness to Lewis and Dodie, we would never have asked to use their company as a false storefront.

And yes, I most definitely said ‘we’.

Actually, Aunt Dodie and I had formulated the plan as a way for Wayne to appear to be settling into the neighborhood. We had reasoned with him that by accepting an Inventory Manager position at Deville, he'd have the cover he needed to find the person his latest client had hired him to locate. Since the person he had to find was also one of Deville’s best customers, Aunt Dodie and I were basically geniuses.

In the meantime, I’ve gone from helping locate missing cozy cash, in my Thug Guard and Lip Glock adventures, to now searching for missing people.

Okay, I’ll admit it. I may have gotten my nose for trouble from Aunt Dodie’s gene pool. But regardless, she had asked me to come home and help her with this job, so here I am.

Besides, I’ve learned a whole new repertoire of investigative skills, thanks to Roman and Zoey and Roman’s QuarterMaster R, and I am rather anxious to try them out.

Wayne pulled his Mac from its silver case and positioned it in the center of the desk. While he waited for it to power-up, he flipped through the paper file he always created on each new client.

Of course, Aunt Dodie and I had already snuck into his briefcase and perused the file, so we knew exactly what it contained.

Luke Branson's press shot slid out of the folder and onto the glass.

Wayne searched the man's face as if his intense study of it would cause the turd to appear right here in the flesh, ready for interrogation.

After adding Luke Branson to my Turd Roster, I couldn’t help but harrumph all to myself. I just love our Cozy Cash Adventure terms. For example, there is “vic” for victims and “perp” for perpetrators.

But by far, my personal favorite is “turd”, the name Roman, Zoey and R use for the money-hungry thugs we’ve been busy rounding-up. And wow, after spending most of my adult life on the posh Upper East Side of Manhattan, I’ve sure never been able to spout-off about turds.

Now then...back to our current turd on the loose.

Luke had the dark features of an Italian god. His black hair cascaded down around his shoulders in the first photo, but was severely pulled back in the second shot. In both, his raven eyes bore holes right through you.

The photos offered no room for misinterpretation. Luke Branson was a force to be feared, and he wanted anyone looking at him to have no doubts they should be afraid...very, very afraid.

Muse Therapy: To The "Rescue"

I'm over the moon to be givin' ya a Sneak Peek at some of the superfab new Muse Therapy Tips, Tricks and Treats I'm now using to keep my muses crankin' out pages with gusto!

As many of you know, one of the ways I keep my muses full of energy and always ready to dance like nobody's watching is by living an organic and all-natural lifestyle.

I'm close to being complete vegan in my approach to healthy eating, and I dable in yoga a bit as well as use all-natural remedies when it comes to healing.

I can't believe the difference in my energy levels just because I watch what I put into my body.

I really do think there's a ton of truth to the harm preservatives and chemicals like growth hormones and additives do to our bodies.

That said, many of u ask me:

"D.D., what are you putting in your coffee and cocktails, Girlfriend?! You always have sooo much energy and are sooo happy!"

Well...I drink my Keurig-made coffee, extra-bold and black, or sometimes with just one all-natural sugar packet added. And as far as my cocktails, I have Happy Hour every afternoon with either a glass of wine or a Black Russian, Hot Apple Cider with Brandy or a martini.

And here's another fun way I now treat my muses too...

My latest discovery:

Made in Switzerland, this flower based homeopathic remedy is made from clematis, impatiens, elderflower, orange and beeswax. http://www.bachflower.com/

I stumbled across these little gems in InStyle magazine as something Salma Hayek and her daughter use while flying. And Salma also uses them to keep calm on crazy busy days.

Thanks sooo much for the superfab tip, Salma!

I really do think these pastilles work, and they're such fun to show your peeps too!

I recently took them to our local County Council meeting, which is definitely an occasion for much-needed stress relief!!! LOL!!!

Healthy bodies - as stress-free as we can get 'em - make for happy and productive muses too.

MUSE THERAPY and The Dash: What Are You Doin' with "The Dash" In Your Life?

Every part of life is a cycle...

Some moments see us flying high while others catch us lower-than-low. And at each point, we know the other will soon cycle around once more.

While on my Writing-for-Publication Roller Coaster Ride, I've been thinking about this a ton lately.

I've had these huge "up's" in the superfab building of my reader and fan bases and sales numbers. But those up's, however, have caused some large holes to open-up in my Meet the Focker's style "Circle of Trust". LOL!

What do I mean by that?

Many of you know - from my MUSE THERAPY book and my online classes and live workshops - that I'm a huge fan of Julia Cameron's THE ARTIST'S WAY.

Like Cameron, I refuse to allow life's Wet Blankets and Crazy-Makers to rain on my life and/or my success.

Wet Blankets and Crazy-Makers are people who constantly bring you down. Some, do it on purpose, and are truly very dark souls who only make themselves feel better by hurting those around them or those they think are doing better than they are. Other Wet Blankets and Crazy-Makers are just plain nuts (LOL!) and don't even realize they make those of us around them doubt our sanity too!

Anyhoo...

The point is...life is just too short to let your Wet Blankets and Crazy-Makers reign.

I can't believe the difference in my muses' productivity and all-around happiness quotient since I've taken back my life and no longer allow those kind of people to rule my world.

So what does all this have to do with "The Dash" and for that matter, what is "The Dash"?

About a month ago, my family lost a dear friend. This was the kind of guy who you always felt sooo wonderful and happy to have spent time with. He was a guy I call "A Warm and Fluffy Heated Towel" vs Cameron's Wet Blankets and Crazy-Makers.

At his funeral, his brother, who is also a pastor, told us about a poem called "The Dash" by Linda Ellis, which is based on that little dash or hyphen between the years that will someday mark your life on your tombstone.

As the poem explains, it's not about when you were born or when you died. It's about how you lived your life in between those years....during your "dash".

So...what are you doing with your "dash"?

Are you letting your Wet Blankets and Crazy-Makers wreak havoc on you? Or are you surrounding yourself with Warm and Fuzzy, Fluffy Heated Towels?

And hopefully, you're also a Fluffy Heated Towel.

That's right. It never hurts to find a gorgeous spot, then get comfy in your fave beach chair, and just veg...or, in my world, simply watch the boats come in.

***Note: U can of course do this the cyber way too - right from your laptop or PC - but if you can get outdoors, even if it's not onto a beach, get out and soak-in some sunshine and Vitamin D and Mother Nature's Magic!***

If you're a writer, it's sooo easy to get mired down in the business-side muck of writing-for-publication.

Even though, I've found part of the solution to that by the incredible feeling I get Paying It Forward to other writers on my grog The WG2E - The Writer's Guide to Epublishing, sometimes still...my muses just need a break.

And if you're not a writer, but rather a superfab reader, you may need a break from life and often find that by escaping into a book, right? And if you happen to be on a beach while reading too?! Well...how darn fantabulous is that?! LOL!

Sometimes you've just got to bask in whatever it is that soothes your soul.

For me, that's the beach, where I swear I can feel my chest open-up and my spirit soar with the seagulls.

I somehow find there, in my parcel of sand, the ability to put my life and career in perspective, then accept my reality and its constant changes, hassles, and advances along with the ebb and flow of the tide.

Listen to your muses - those voices in your soul - that whisper to you exactly what your body, mind and psyche need to survive and thrive.

Then find your "beach"...and sit on it!!!

This post today is a big 'ole shout-out and thank u to all my superfab readers and fans!!!

I sooo wantchy'all to know how very much your support and great buzz means to this author...that would be me...LOL...and how much it means to almost every author I know.

The Biz of Being an Author has sooo changed over this past year, thanks to the beyond wonderful Epublishing World!

And here's the little gem of all these changes that I think is a complete treasure and world wonder of its own merit:

Thanks to Epublishing, Readers and Fans "validate" books...not just The Big Six New York Pubs Anymore.

Readers and Fans - like all of you most wondermous here in D. D. Scott-ville - are the true gems...the proverbial diamonds in the roughs of every author's writing-for-publication journey.

It used to be - and I'm saying used to be in a short-term sense (as in just last year), that a writer, like me, as of last August 2010, still unpubbed after 10 years of playing by the TradiPub World's Rules, would still be sitting there, with 10 plus manuscripts ready to go, a big-time agent to handle her submissions, countless "we love your book(s), but they're too much this or not enough that to sell"...yada yada yada...you get the picture...

So yes, last year, at this same time, I was still waiting...waiting for the only type of "validation" writers have in the TradiPub World...in that, some editor, for some NY Pub, luuuvvved your book enough to convince the next editor up from them that "this baby will sell".

Without that "validation"...your career as a TradiPub Published Author is on hold.

You have no books on any shelves...whether cyber or brick-and-mortar store shelves...and thus, you have no Readers and Fans.

You're sharing your writing, if you're lucky, with only the dog and/or cat and/or both at your feet while you're cranking out pages and book after book after book.

But ohhhhhhhhhh yeahhhhhhhhhh...not anymore!!!

And welcome to my first Behind & Beyond My Books for my next release LIP GLOCK - Book Two of The Cozy Cash Mysteries - which will be released in August!

So...how is it...that an author gets to the point when he or she can write that first page of a book?

Well...for me, that first page begins in a series of images, that, for whatever reason, grab-hold of my muses and scream 'oh yeahhh...you're writing this one about these things'!

For example, for LIP GLOCK, here's what my muses are demanding of me...

CHAPTER ONE

Life in a castle ain’t all it’s cracked-up to be.

Especially when you’ve arrived here after being at the wrong end of a Glock.

A Glock held to your chest by a woman old enough to be your Granny, and who’s endowed with these monster-sized lips, formed into a maybe-evil-maybe-not, super-botoxed, Cheshire Cat-style grin.

And I mean it...Granny Veruschka’s lips take-up half her damn face. A face that once graced the world’s top fashion magazines, with a body attached that also got her on every hot catwalk. But now, a face that had seen one too many botox injections, and a body, although still sleek and cat-like, was currently filled with who knew what the hell kinda motivation to be holding me at Glock-point.

So now...here I sit, in my fave of all positions – the fetal position...my new M.O. –gazing at the Actaeon sculpture in the cascade of the castle grounds now holding me hostage.

Not familiar with the story of Actaeon?

Here’s the scoop...

Actaeon is an iconic motif used in ancient art, both Renaissance and post-Renaissance, in which a hunter becomes the hunted.

Are you starting to get why I’m in the fetal position staring down good ‘ole Actaeon?

Let me make it perfectly clear and paint y’all a rather disturbing snapshot.

Actaeon was once a hunter of stag and wolves, but now, thanks to Artemis, another Greek Mythology big-shot, Actaeon was a stag himself, with the wolves he used to hunt now about to rip him apart.

Kinda the story of my life the last couple weeks.

I’m Zoey Witherspoon, a fairly new, badge-toting P.I., who’s been on Thug Guard hunting a twisted bundle of Ponzi-scheming turds throughout both The States then Europe too, along with my Secret Bond – as in James Bond-esque - Roman Bellesconi, Prince-of-Many-Names, and now his Granny Veruschka too.

Except the strangest thing happened on my way to get my all-things-green Naked Juice, my fellow hunters – Roman and his could-be-lethal Granny – decided I was the one to be hunted.

At least that’s the impression I got.

But maybe that’s just me, and there was another reason good ‘ole Granny had a Glock pointed at my Gucci blouse in the parking lot of the Jiffy Mart back in Music City.

Not like I’d know said reason...because Roman and his Could-Be-Lethal Granny had so far refused to tell me shit!

I’m tellin’ ya...life in a castle ain’t all it’s cracked-up to be...not when you don’t have a God damn clue how or why you’re here.

Okay...so maybe I had the tiniest of ideas “why” I’m here.

‘Course that was before Granny drugged me and got me all comfy in the family kingdom’s private jet for a flight across the pond...then into Milan...and straight to Castle Command Central.

Thus the fetal position...

And...oh shit...here comes Granny...

Now...from here, I'll spend a couple weeks fine-tuning these first couple pages, along with writing the first three chapters.

The first three chapters of each book are the toughest for me, and thus, take the most time.

That's when I'm really fleshing-out my characters and plot-points.

Once I've nailed these first three chapters, I can write the rest of the book in about four to six weeks.

I'm writing at a pace of one book every two to three months now...and that's sooo workin' for me and my muses and my readers and fans too!

Fiction-Writing Plotting Techniques: The D. D. Scott Element List

Now that my 5th Book is out - THUG GUARD, Book One of my new, Cozy Cash Mysteries - which is actually my 15th manuscript, I'm beginning to develop my very own, fiction-writing techniques for creating a D. D. Scott book.

My writing weakness used to be plotting.

And...to that once, huge-ass issue...I used to say:

"Why can't my characters just sit on a supercool bench in some great location and chat for 300 or so pages?! I've been repeatedly told my dialogue and witty banter rock. So yeah...let's just let my characters talk!"

Why can't my characters just sit on a supercool bench and chit-chat?!

Well...these days, it's because they're also involved in solving mysteries, which requires they get off their butts and follow their leads...or, let's face it, find a lead...any lead...LOL!

But, thanks first, to my fantabulous, mystery-writing author friend Misa Ramirez, I now begin each Cozy Cash Mystery with her Mystery Plot Exercise...which includes jotting down the following items:

*** A Sleuth

*** Victim(s)

*** 3 Different Suspects

*** 3 Different Motives For Killing

*** False Leads

*** Real Clues

*** Killer Revealed At The End

So, I took Misa's wayyy fab list, then added my own D. D. Scott twist.

How?!

Well...in my D. D. Scott Books, I like to explore what I call Pop Culture "Elements" in each book.

CHAPTER ONE

I walked into the Jiffy Mart at the corner of Pike’s Place and Sweenie Avenue. All I wanted was a bottle of my wheat grass-included, all-things-green Naked Juice. What I got was a dead man – yeah, as in who knows how he got that way but he sooo was – a dead man in the passenger seat of the Range Rover parked next to me.

This guy wasn’t just merely dead, he was most sincerely dead. And no, I’m not the Munchkin Land Coroner. I’m Zoey Witherspoon, just another wanna-be Stephanie Plum about to call for back-up.

My back-up, Roman Bellesconi - my very own Walker, Texas Ranger - was not gonna like this at all.

Thinking the dead guy situation probably deserved my more immediate attention, I coached my sugar-deprived body to hold tight for its much-needed burst of Naked Juice.

Calling Roman’s cell, I waited for his rugged-rough, this-had-better-be-good voicemail greeting, wishing just once he’d think I was important enough to answer the damn phone.

“Yep. You know the drill. Leave a message,” his voice mail not-so-warmly invited me to do.

“Roman. It’s me. Pick-up if you’re there,” I said, taking a yoga-deep breath, knowing just as I was about to cuss a blue streak, then make a second attempt at maintaining my never quite calm demeanor, he’d answer.

“What’s up, Zoey? Or do I even want to know?”

Roman’s way sexy, ultra deep voice - a cross between Stallone and Pacino’s Italian, drool-worthy accents – cut-off his voicemail prompt.

The clank of his barbell echoed through his Blue Tooth after what was sure to have been one helluvan impressive bench press.

I mean really. Who answers the phone while bench pressing 325 pounds?

Roman does. And I’ve seen him do it. He actually has enough extra muscle gravitating to his shoulders that he can move those wads of steel against his Blue Tooth’s answer switch. Yeah. Incredible, right?

Honestly...who could even talk period while lifting that much weight?

I rolled my eyes, which I tend to do a lot when thinking about Roman’s antics.

Although, I may have been secretly contemplating what else he could do with those kinda muscles. But a woman doesn’t have to share all her secrets...so I’m savoring the detail of that one for a bit...and just tossing it out there for a conversation-building “what if”.

And speaking of conversing, hell, I do well to walk and talk at the same time.

Some days, in the kinds of shoes my real job demands, that feat, in and of itself is damn near impossible. Today’s gorgeous, buff-colored Louboutin platform pumps...yeah, well, you get the toe-breaking, heels-wobbling picture.

But not my Roman in his Italian, hand-crafted loafers. He’s the super-shoed and super-fit, hot Sicilian version of a kick ass Christopher Chance of Human Target fame, although with the height and killer body of international cover model Jimmy Thomas.

My Roman isn’t exactly like my Jimmy, who I’d recently used in a couple of my New York Fashion Week Runway Shows, and who, by the way, has the personality of a big and brawny teddy bear. Oh no. Sooo not Roman-esque.

Roman Bellesconi has something dark, very dark, deep inside his super beefed-up torso. Totally, the Sicilian Christopher Chance through-and-through...just add more beef.

I hadn’t figured out what that dark something was or how it got there or why it was hanging around. But I’m hell-bent on getting to the bottom of all that beef, just give me a couple more cases to work with him, and I’ll have some answers.

“You still there, Witherspoon?” Roman asked.

His voice indicated my ability to zone in and out of conversations amused rather than irritated him. At least for the moment.

“Oh sure. Yeah. Sorry. I haven’t had my Naked Juice yet, so I’m not quite up to speed,” I said, knowing I could no longer avoid sharing this soon to be breaking news.

Plus, if I gave Roman the slightest chance to catch his breath, post bench press, he was sure to pop-off with some smart ass comment about my need for Naked Juice speed.

“So I’m here at the Jiffy Mart. You know, the whole swamp juice thing. And there’s this Range Rover parked next to me,” I said, looking through my latest couture sunnies straight into the eyes of the dead man.

“I’m not real interested in this story yet, Witherspoon. You got anything else?” Roman asked as he hit the button on his blender, making his own swamp juice.

“Oh, you’re gonna be interested. There’s a dead man in this Range Rover,” I baited him, noticing that his blender was no longer blending.

“You’ve got my undivided attention now, Plum Puddin’.”

Hearing the smart ass but kinda hot way he pronounced the pet name he’d recently christened me with, I could feel heat flush my cheeks.

“Unfortunately for you, perhaps, I’ll have your attention for awhile longer, Italian Stallion. As in...our first official case longer,” I said, so hoping he’d let me tag along for this investigation.

“I’ll be the judge of when and if you work another case for us,” Roman said.

Lucky for me, I could still hear amusement in his tone so I figured I’d better keep striking while the time seemed sort of right to maintain my spot on the U.S. Marshal’s and SEC’s payroll.

“I think the dead man in the Range Rover,” I said, looking over the crisp lavender edges of my Louis Vuitton sunglasses one more time, just to make sure I’d made the proper identification of our vic, “is none other than Ludwig Kohn.”

I heard Roman take a deep, very calculated and measured breath, never uttering a word. The precise thing he did when that dark side of his was about to take control.

“Ludwig Kohn, as in Sonja Medici’s henchman.”

“I know who Ludwig is, Witherspoon,” Roman said, his Dark Knight-ness now clearly taking over his voice.

“So I take it he survived his little run-in with Alexandra, me and her minivan?” I asked, still pissed Roman and his Marshal Monkeys refused to tell me what exactly had become of Ludwig after he’d been run over by Alexandra and me in the Hobby Lobby parking lot.

“He didn’t survive for long did he?” Roman asked, an icy edge to his question.

“No, I suppose not. But I do assume you now get that I will be on this case with you? Our first official job as a dynamic duo.”

Even saying that made me feel giddier than going to any of the London, Milan or Paris Fashion Week’s coming soon.

“You know the assume adage, don’t you, Witherspoon?”

Yeah, I did. But I wasn’t letting him off the hook that easy, even if he was back in his cranky pants, dark-guy mode.

“What I know is that you can’t make any bigger ass outta me than I can make outta myself, if that’s what you’re referring to,” I said, tickled with my own witty response.

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” he said, punching the high-speed option on his blender.

What a chicken shit, I thought. He didn’t have the balls to listen to my comeback on that one, so he’d chosen his blender instead.

But I swore I heard him say something to the effect that he’d be right there so for me to just sit tight.

Like what was I gonna do? Just leave poor Ludwig stiff in his seat?

I may have pretty much fallen into my last gig with Roman. But I’d earned the right to work this one. I’d found my first dead man. So until Ludwig was stuffed into a body bag, I wasn’t goin’ anywhere.

I was officially on this case. Well, sort of officially.

But I’d built my fashion empire by creating buzz, buzz based on me sort-of, already being in demand by potential, high-powered clients. I’d always acted “as if” I’d already made it. And that approach had more than served me well.

So why change tactics now?

People want what they think others already have. So you’ve got to make sure they know what they’re more-than-likely missing.

Although, I was freaking out a bit that Ludwig here was now missing a life force, and I was definitely holding out hope I’d soon be free from my first dead body. Because why? Keeping with my philosophy, I wanted what others already had...my God damn Naked Juice.

My sugar was already plummeting dangerously low. And seeing Ludwig out-for-the-count sure hadn’t raised my blood sugar levels. My adrenaline yeah, which meant I now needed even more sugar I didn’t have.

But sugar levels aside, this new kinda rush, based on discovering bodies, was quite intriguing.

Maybe I was finally in the right career field. Talk about a calling. How many people could just find a dead body? And a dead body they could identify no less?

When Roman had been protecting my dear friend and client Alexandra McCall – yes that Alexandra McCall, the daughter of jailed Ponzi-scheme King Bernard McCall - I’d been, at first, nothing more than the McCall family’s stylist.

But I’d soon gotten involved in Roman’s case, as an intelligence officer of sorts.

Okay, so maybe I was just a well-respected inside informant. As in a wealth-of-information source. Simply because I knew more about Alexandra and her family than Roman possibly ever could.

Cut to the fantabulous chase, I’d plucked my golden apple when it fell from its money tree then gone-on to prove my worthiness to the Fed’s entire Cozy Cash Operation.

Yeah. That was the code-word for the Marshal Monkey’s McCall Operation...Cozy Cash. Clever. And catchy too.

But this time, there’d be no little ‘ole me just falling into a crime-busting gig.
Since Roman and I’s last partnership, I’d done the time. Well, not time as in jail time. Hello? I’m on the good team. I’d done time by studying my ass off and earning my P.I.’s license.

Now...I could officially play with the big boys.

I held up my badge, declaring my name and my new part-time gig – in a rather poorly done and cheesy-font monogramming. But regardless, I still love how the brilliant sunshine gleams off the cheap metal.

The badge is nothing like the radiance I’m accustomed to from the high-end, one-of-a-kind jewels I frequently pick-up from designers who loan their pieces to my clients. But I love my new badge, and what it stands for, more than the biggest and best of borrowed, Cartier diamonds.

Thanks to Ludwig Kohn’s well-dressed corpse, I, Zoey Witherspoon, P.I. – oh, and still a Stylist to the Stars and Fashion Designer too – was back in business.

But now, it had nothing to do with what people were wearing.

No more Red Carpet Events. Or Runway Show Spectaculars. Rather, at this unique stage in my life, it was all about who would rather bury my clients beneath the carpet.

Well, in theory, but I’d still promised to stay in Music City long enough to take care of one last client, which was another one of the reasons, besides my whole borderline diabetic issue, that I had to get my hands on that Naked Juice.
My last client was a real pistol. One of those bitches who made you not only wanna buy a pistol, but then also learn how to shoot the damn thing too. I needed all the extra nourishment I could get to deal with this diva.

I peeked in at my first dead body one last time before Roman’s circus started. Once he and all his Marshal Monkeys arrived, I probably wouldn’t get another shot at the body.

The whole eyes rolling back in the head was a very strong clue I was definitely calling this right. Plus, there was that surprised open mouth thing, but you get the picture. I reaffirmed my initial decision that Ludwig really was more than quite deceased.

He was no longer on Earth anyway. Perhaps in Purgatory. Trying to cross the River Styx. Or maybe already in Hell. Ludwig Kohn was a bad dude. A really, really bad dude. Straight to Hell was probably a fairly good guess as to his current whereabouts.

Remembering my new training required I always be aware of my surroundings, I looked around the parking lot. So as to be more discreet, I kept my Louis’s in place.

Frankly though, I must already be quite proficient at the whole surroundings awareness bit, since I’d only had my P.I. license a week and already discovered my first dead body.

Not seeing any other Jiffy Mart customers in the area, and thinking, since I was the car parked next to Ludwig, that no one else would have any need to be between my door and his, I figured I could probably make it both into the store then out, with my Naked Juice, well before Roman and his Monkey Squad arrived.

Damn, I needed that juice.

It wasn’t every day that a girl in Vuitton, Armani and Louboutin, on her way to style the soon-to-be divorced wench-of-a-wife of a superstar comedian, got held up at a Jiffy Mart, by a dead man in a Range Rover.

How fun is that?!

For a little extra somethin' special for all you D. D. Scott-ville moms, I'm givin' ya a Sample Sunday Sneak Peek at The Mom Squad in action in Book Three of The Bootscootin' Books - BUCKLES ME BABY - when they first meet my new, Cozy Cash Mystery hero and heroine, THUG GUARD's Roman Bellesconi and Zoey Witherspoon:

“So what do we do now?” Damian looked up to Roman and Zoey, who were standing side-by-side, watching them.

“Well...for starters, we’re going to need more back-up. I’ve called in additional agents and will be hiring another private security team as well,” Roman said as easy as if he’d ordered take-out.

“Jules and I also have Cody and Zayne on their way. That’ll help too, right?” Roxy asked, her determination to fight for whatever control she could firmly in place.

“I’m glad for that,” Damian said, and he truly was.

He needed his guys here. He was tough. But he was in way over his abilities. Forget sanity. He’d done lost that when Audrey told him they were expecting. And forget macho too. ‘Cause macho wasn’t gonna get the crap from Audrey’s past off their television screen and outta the papers and magazines.

Before he could even think about finding his senses or extra guts, he heard Cody and Zayne come into the house, with –oh shit – The Mom Squad – right behind ‘em.

“Oh boy,” Audrey said, her voice barely a whisper, although Damian was glad to see the slight uplift of the corner of her mouth.

At least with The Mom Squad in the house, none of their senses of humor would be lost.

Damian watched as Cody’s Gramma Lucy, Zayne’s mom Kat and Roxy’s mom Lily filed past the couch and headed straight for the U.S. Marshals.

And not to be left out, the new Music City Aphrodisiac Queen, Jules’ Aunt Tulip, came in next, a basket of she and Cody’s Aphrodisiac-themed produce slung across her arms.

The Mom Squad was back.

And Audrey was right, Damian thought.

Oh boy.

Seeing Tulip take a large pickle then an avocado out of her basket and approach Roman, Damian didn’t think he could take the heat of watching the guy who was supposedly their chief of security succumb to Tulip’s shenanigans.

Taking Tulip’s pickle, if for no other reason, Damian figured, than to shut her up, Roman handed it to Zoey who then had this incredulous ‘what the hell do you want me to do with it’ look.

Clearing his throat, as if Tulip’s vegetables had no effect on him at all, Roman asked everyone to be seated so they could go over new ground rules and protocol changes.

How fun is that?!

And wait 'til you see what The Mom Squad is up to next - on May 16th - as they become Roman and Zoey's official/un-official "back-up" in THUG GUARD...

Being a Water Warrior with My Heroes & Heroines Too!

Happy Tuesday and Happy Earth Day too, D. D. Scott-ville!

Yes...I know, last Friday, April 22nd, was officially Earth Day, but everyday is Earth Day in D. D. Scott-ville!

The DH and I always, always recycle all that we can, and we're sooo tickled our recycle bin fills-up ten times to one as quickly as our garbage bin. We also eat as much organic as we can get our hands on, and make art for our home and yard out of as much of other people's "junk" as we can find.

This year, though, I wanted to do something extra for Earth Day...and since we live along the fantabulous shores of Lake Michigan, I knew just what to do...

With the help of my Aveda Salon, I became a Water Warrior, by getting this super-cool, water-blue hair extension...

How cool is that?!

First off, I'm not talking about these Short-Shorts

When I say Show & Tell Us About Your Short-Shorts, Shorts & Novellas, I’m talkin’ about the lengths of those stories you’re reading that aren’t full-length novels.

Now, when I researched the definitions and word counts of each of these story formats, given our tremendously changing publishing world, I of course found nothing remotely definitive as far as answers. But here are some basic guidelines (from Wikipedia):

Short-Shorts = anything less than 1000 words

Short Stories = 7000 – 9000 words to some and anywhere from 1000 – 20,000 to others

Novellas = 17,500 – 40,000 words or anywhere from 10,000 – 70,000

Novels = 65,000 words and up

Told ya…no dice on definitive numbers, right?

But really…who cares?!

All that matters are that we’re getting fantabulous books and hopefully for fantabulous prices too, right?!

So...here’s where I need your help, D. D. Scott-ville Readers and Fans...

Writing Realistic Crime Scenes: Death By Pepper Spray and...Cocaine?

Happy Tuesday, D. D. Scott-ville!

So I'm wayyy, wayyy deep into deadline week for my mid-May release THUG GUARD - Book One of my new, Cozy Cash Mysteries.

And I needed to kill-off a couple suspects.

Being as my heroine Zoey Witherspoon is a Stylist to The Stars, plus now a P.I. too, I had to find a fashion-world kinda way to do-in a couple bad guys.

My research so far had involved all kinds of Miss Universe-style pageant sabotage stories like the one from 2007 when Miss Puerto Rico's gown and makeup were tampered with using a pepper-based itching powder.

Which made me ponder...

Can Pepper Spray kill?

More research...

And I found this fantabulous blog...

Plus, I found the answers I needed.

Pepper Spray can kill, if a person is on Cocaine at the same time.

And here's the scoop, straight from Dr. Lyle's post "Cocaine and Pepper Spray: A Lethal Combination?":

Pepper spray is a very painful product to have sprayed in your face. The reaction to this sudden pain and burning of the eyes and throat is a fight or flight response. Epinephrine is released by the adrenal glands in massive quantities and, in a situation where there is already cocaine in the system, it could easily cause dangerous arrhythmias, heart attacks, or strokes. The combination of cocaine and epinephrine is known to be potentially deadly.

I would suspect that if this combination does indeed prove to be lethal that this is the mechanism by which it occurs. The danger is not from the cocaine and the pepper spray, at least not directly, but rather from the combination of cocaine and the epinephrine that is released due to the pain of the capsaicin. The devil is in the details.

But from a practical point of view, dead is dead and the mechanism is more or less irrelevant. Very interesting and I hope there is further research in this arena.

Sooo...there you have it. Pepper Spray can kill...if cocaine is already wreaking havoc on the body's systems.

Sometimes Being an Author Makes You...Faint!

Last Friday, I had one of the most amazing experiences thus far in my writing-for-publication career, and I just had to share it.

So...I'm sitting in my fave comfy chair, a Keurig Hot Cocoa Cup close-by and my Kindle in my lap, just like I do every Friday, after lunch, catching up on the week's publishing industry blogs and grogs...

When what to my wondering eyes should appear...oh wait...wrong story...but trust me, this was sooo much better than Santa Claus...

Anyhoo...moving on...

I clicked on my Kindle Subscription to one of my uber fave industry blogs - Bufo Calvin's I LOVE MY KINDLE - and read this post headline:

"Author Sells 12 Times as many books at $0.99"

Thinking to myself 'cool, that's a must-read 'cause I've had a very similar experience', I clicked on the post and began to read. Here...check this out:

"Author Sells 12 Times as many books at $0.00"

When I saw that not only did this author have the same experience, but that this author was also, in fact, ME - YOURS TRULY, I'm honestly not sure what happened.

I remember standing up - because I was gonna do a huge 'ole Happy Dance around my living room - but the next thing I knew I woke up on my living room floor, in the fetal position, crying like a baby.

No joke! I think I fainted!!!

LOL!!!

You see...I'm a huge fan of Bufo's I LOVE MY KINDLE and consider him one of "the" Go-To-Guys for all-things-Kindle and Epublishing. When I saw that he was following my career, and not just following it, but talking it up, I...well...fainted I guess.

So yeah...sometimes, being a writer makes you...faint!

Cheers to that job hazard! LOL!!!

2. I've met and worked with, plus arranged for a doctor to see - because one of them had an awful case of the flu - one of my fave all-time musical duos Air Supply. (P.S. Their costumes were quite smelly after being on tour for awhile...but damn, they can still sing the songs just like I used to sing with 'em on my Mr. Microphone.)

And damn, those costumes were really really, very very smelly. I mean seriously, during their performance, they knelt down beside me and sang to me, and I damn near passed-out. I held my breath for so damn long, it 'bout did me in. People thought I was blown away by the opportunity to be serenaded by my Mr. Microphone Muse Faves...but no, I was blown away by the smell of said Mr. Microphone Faves.

Anyhoo...

1. I don't believe in cocktails or "therapy"...or using cocktails as "therapy"

5. No angels sang when I was born - like Paige Pendleton claimed when she received her award. Hell no. My birthing buddies from above - who probably had wayyy, wayyy crooked halos - thought, "Happy Hour early tonight, Peeps!". Well...that's what I woulda been thinkin' if I were them. Nothin' like toasting to your screw-ups.

Writing Realistic Crime Scenes: Do Bodies Float or Sink in a Pool?

I'm thrilled to launch my new Blog Series regarding Writing Realistic Crime Scenes!!!

My new Cozy Cash Mysteries Heroine Zoey Witherspoon has a knack for finding dead bodies...

So, I gotta figure out all the scoop on all-things-Crime Scene-and-Dead Bodies too...and not the Hollywood CSI version mind you...we all know "that's Hollywood"...not exactly realistic, right?...although, it sure as hell seems quite cool on our TV screens.

Anyhoo...first up for Zoey, well actually second, because she's already found her first dead guy in a Range Rover parked next to her at her local Jiffy Mart...so...onto Dead Guy Two...

He's found in the swimming pool of his billion dollar Palm Beach estate.

So here's Zoey's question:

Would Dead Guy Two be face-up or down in his swimming pool and would he be floating at the top or skimming the bottom of the pool?

In my D. D. Scott-ville-world then, I first go to my DH who is a 27-year veteran of our Sheriff's Department (now Captain and Commander of our County Jail)...and who also once served on our Dept. Dive Team.

My Captain said:

Your Dead Guy Two will only float once gases like carbon dioxide and methane build-up in his body after he's deceased. That causes the body to then float to the top of the pool. And you'll find the body face down because that's how the design of the body allows it to float...because of the head, arms and legs naturally moving forward only.

Damn, my DH is smart!!!

The Moonlighting Curse: To Believe or Not To Believe

Every romance writer has a choice to make...with each book or series...and with each Hero and Heroine. And that choice is:

"Will They? Or Won't They?"

As in...will they become a couple and complete that part of their romance...or won't they resolve that part of their relationship journey...then continue that quest in the next book, if a series, and keep the reader guessing...and in some cases, guessing...and guessing...and guessing.

So...while I'm writing my new Stephanie Plum-Wanna Be, Cozy Cash Mysteries Heroine - Zoey Witherspoon - "will she" or "won't she" hook up with her Hero Roman Bellesconi?

I'll tell y'all, right up front, that, as a writer, I tend to lean far, far away from The Moonlighting Curse...

Anybody who's been in a relationship knows that they have complexities and compromises. There's plenty of stuff to mine.

If there's one thing I've learned in my ten plus year writing-for-publication journey, it's that, in order to survive and thrive, you've got to harness your inner Elphaba and Defy Gravity!!!

But here's the secret...you've got to Defy Gravity in your own way, whether that's the "normal" publishing industry approved way or not.

One of my very fave lines in Elphaba's wonderful Wicked world is when she says:

Last week, I officially took down the collage I created for BUCKLES ME BABY - Book Three of my Bootscootin' Books Series - and started the collage I'll make - as a WIP of my new WIP - THUG GUARD, Book One of my new RomCom-Cozy Series The Cozy "Cash" Mysteries.

Here's what I've got so far on the new THUG GUARD Collage:

Today's Muse Therapy Extra Tidbit is all about "Commitment" --- oh, and not the
neurotic writer-nut type my DH thinks I may need to be committed for...LOL!!!

We're talking "commitment" as derived from a question a past student asked me.
She inquired:

"I'm curious when you became serious enough to commit to getting up at ungodly hours of the morning. Is that something that came once you felt like you were
really close? I battle this in my own mind because sometimes I think I AM
working hard and then other times, I think I'm a major slug compared to other
people. So maybe I don't want it enough or I'm not truly willing to do what it
takes to get published."

First, for me and my commitment level -- and I'll preface this by saying that's
why my DH thinks I'm a neurotic writer-nut and may need to be committed - enough
is never enough!

I'm always, always, ALWAYS asking myself "what else can I be doing to bring that next deal and the next one after that and the next one...?"

But that's just me and what works for me and my Carrie Squad. I've just got
tons of ideas always flowing (which I jot down on whatever is around me at the
time...you don't even want to go there...LOL!...I'll scribble on ANYTHING!!!)
because I never stop thinking about producing my ideas. Even when I try to shut
it off, I can't. Except when I go to bed...LOL! I'm completely out in less
than five minutes! LOL!

Your commitment - whether it's getting up wayyy early or staying up late or just writing one hour each day or less - is serious enough WHEN YOU'RE READY FOR IT
TO BE. It's really that simple and almost that harsh and beyond difficult at
the same time.

I have NEVER waited for any bit of success (winning a contest, finding an agent,
getting a great critique) to catapult my desires to another level.

I've always "Acted As If" I'm already there...

Because why you ask...

Debbie Macomber told me to do just that at RWA in Reno in 2005ish (not sure that's the right year but close). That's how she (and Allison Brennan too - she's been a great personal example to me as well --- luv them!) made it...because they never stopped to let the doubt that they weren't there yet stop 'em!

I've never slowed down or looked back since!

If you're ready NOW then NOW is the time to step-it-up!

That being said...I'm going to challenge you to MAKE MORE OF YOUR TIME CENTERED
ON PURSUING YOUR WRITING-FOR-PUBLICATION CAREER. You all may be doing tons of
fabulous things for the writing world and beyond but how is YOUR WRITING
PRODUCTION when you look at pages produced or ideas firmly in place and ready to
go?

We're actually going to be doing a time study of sorts in one of the sessions in
this book. So hang in there with me.

And please don't think I'm telling you to quit any of the wonderful things you
do IF THEY'RE MAKING YOUR MUSES DANCE AND HELPING YOU CRANK OUT YOUR OWN
PAGES...but and that's a huge but...we're going to make sure you really WANT AND
NEED to do these things for YOUR production level and goals.

It's great to be BUSY but is your "BUSY" GETTING YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GO? If
not, we'll find a way to get you there!!!

What constructive actions can we take after we’ve ruminated about our beyond frustrating writing-for-publication journeys?

Me personally?

Well, I use my other main lifeline outside of anger management therapy and rumination – Audrey Hepburn.

There’s just something about singing Mancini’s “Moon River” – just like Audrey did for her Holly Golightly in BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S - that is the cud I’ll forever chew-on while ruminating about how to handle Evil-Editor-Turds everywhere.

Since not all of us are (a) New York City playgirl escorts like Audrey’s Holly (who gets fifty dollars every time she goes to the powder room while trolling for a millionaire to marry) or (b) if you’re a guy, a “sponsored” playboy writer (like Capote’s George Peppard-played Paul), we’ve got to be like the real Audrey Hepburn. We’ve got to know ‘how to be lovely’ in the face of wanting to misplace our aggressions after each rejection letter we receive.

And unless you live in New York City, and perusing Tiffany’s windows with a coffee cup and Danish, are but a cab ride, subway trip, or walk away, you’ve got to rely on other means to soothe your muses.

Audrey herself gave us many brilliant tips on how to make the most of where we’re at in life right now. She said:

“We are all grown-up children, really. Our lives are made up of adulthood and childhood, all together. So one should go back in search of what was loved and found to be real.”

So as does Julia Cameron in her ARTIST’S WAY, Hepburn looks to her inner artist child and her childhood itself for relief from the disappointments and frustrations of career and adulthood.

Audrey took long walks, read books, listened to music and arranged flowers (Hellstern, HOW TO BE LOVELY), finding peace in the solitude of these activities.

“I have to be alone quite often. I’d be quite happy if I spent Saturday night to Monday morning in my apartment. That’s how I refuel.”

“When the chips are down, you are alone, and loneliness can be terrifying. Fortunately...I love to be alone. It doesn’t bother me one bit. I’m my own company.”

I’m the same way in that often I take refuge and find comfort in being alone with my inner self/child. But even though I resort first to dealing with my fear on my own, I also use Muse Therapy – yep, you betchya, the very same “therapy” techniques I’m teaching you – to finish getting a grip on my writing fears and frustrations.

And Audrey supported “getting a therapist” too. She said to “just get on with it” if that might do the trick for you. She realized the alternative meant misplaced aggression in that you’d end up “blowing your top” and “having to go around apologizing” after the fact.

For Audrey, the most important part of being able to accept life’s insecurities was learning to live with herself. In Muse Therapy-speak that means part of the success secret is learning and discovering then accepting what makes you, your soul and your muses tick plus what ticks them off.

“The greatest victory in my life has been to be able to live with myself, to accept my shortcomings and those of others. I’m a long way from being the human being I’d like to be. But I’ve decided I’m not so bad after all.”

To have “the right book at the right time for the right editor”, every writer’s muse arsenal must be fortified with perseverance. To build then secure the foundation of their creative castles, writers must hoard and utilize that vital tool.

A sure-fire way to beef-up our perseverance reservoirs is to study and implement many ideas first proposed by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. Jung theorized that humans rely too much on science and logic. We certainly know by now that those ideals sure aren’t found in our writing-for-publication journeys, right?

Jung’s approach to psychology – known as Jungian psychology – explored human behavior by studying dreams, art, mythology, religion, Eastern and Western philosophies, alchemy, astrology, sociology and literature. Instead of science and logic, Jung advocated we pursue personal goals of discovering and fulfilling our deepest, innate potentials and rely on spirituality to guide our journeys.

He believed our journey’s purpose was to meet our “selfs” through the various disciplines listed above. Then, he taught, we can transform ourselves into our essential being, a process he called individuation. (Wikipedia)

Individuation – what a beyond powerful tool for writers to harness!

Let’s examine how you can make the concept work for you and your muses.

Jung said that it’s not just ‘okay’ to follow our individual journeys and goals. He argued rather that it’s our most basic and natural purpose as human beings to pursue our own unique journey. By transforming ourselves into that special, one-of-a-kind individual we hope, dream, desire and struggle to become, we persevere.

Wow! Jung really ‘got’ what it is to be a writer. We so struggle to find our voice, our words and stories. We so want to be accepted by the Universe for our unique take on the world and human life at-large. We so have a hellacious struggle to make those dreams come true. Struggles definitely defying science and logic.

Being a writer is my Jungian deep, innate potential. Writing is a spiritual experience essential to my well-being, regardless of whether I ever become a bestselling “butterfly”.

And here’s the writer’s “butterfly” dilemma.

Most caterpillars, but not all, are pre-destined by Mother Nature to become butterflies. Writers have no such pre-determined guarantee that either by nature or nurture they’ll become published aka butterflies, let alone best-selling butterflies.

Jung does give us hope, though, that we can affect our destiny. He brought to the forefront of possibility that coincidences can be meaningful enough that they appear to be meant to be. In other words, things can happen for us as if Mother Nature and/or fate, sweet serendipity or synchronicity were the masters of our Universe.

By bringing people, events and opportunities together, Jung theorized that the Universe allows for that awe-inspiring Law of Attraction in which things just seem to fit into a plan as opposed to remaining mere random events.

To make the Law of Attraction (LOA) and Synchronicity work for you, though, you’ve got to have a plan and work it like a crazed, over-driven nutcase.

So then...

To "poach" your audience, you use the fabulous Search Function on Twitter and identify groups of people to follow based on topics that relate to your books.

But she’s traded in her high-power stilettos for Sketchers ‘cause her feet are swollen and killing her. Pregnancy is a bitch, especially when you’ve assumed a false identity to dodge paparazzi on account of your Madoff-style, Ponzi-scheming parents.

Nashville TN homebuilder Damian Baker is screwed and not in the construction sense of the word. Who would have thought the first room he’d be designing and building for his dream home would be a nursery...for his and Audrey’s twins? But he’s hell-bent on providing well for and protecting the woman he loves plus the children he can’t wait to meet.

I call BUCKLES ME BABY a Romantic Comedy-Cozy...as it's a hybrid cross of the romantic comedy genre and the cozy mystery genre.

And as you may know from my previous blog posts, 2011 is all about hybrid crosses here in D. D. Scott-ville...or what J. A. Konrath and I call Cross-Pollination.

Cross-Pollination is taking characters and elements from one story in a particular genre and putting them into a completely different genre. And it's a brilliant way to treat your readers to a new genre that maybe they've never read before but will enjoy because they love the characters and elements you've crossed-over into that new genre.

So yeah...BUCKLES ME BABY is a Romantic Comedy-Cozy.

And here's how I've done it...

I'm totally self-made via Indie Epublishing.

And I'm here to tell you - then show you how - it can be done.

I'm right on track - as you'll see comparing my numbers to other Bestselling Indie Authors - to selling my own multiple thousands of Ebooks by the end of 2011.

Life Is All About How You Handle Plan B

Plan A is always my first choice. You know, the one where everything works out to be "happily ever after." But more often than not, I find myself dealing with the upside-down, inside-out version where nothing goes as it should. It's at this point the real test comes in...Do I sink or do I swim? Do I wallow in self-pity and play the victim or simply shift gears and make the best of the situation? The choice is mine. After all...life is all about how you handle Plan B.

Plan B...it's the true test of character.

How fabulous is this mantra?!

When I stumbled upon Suzy's Calendar in a Cracker Barrel, I knew I'd found my secret to living life in 2011!!!

Plan B is exactly what my cofounding of The WG2E was all about!

Writers now "get" - after continuing to watch and live the fall-out of the traditional publishing business model - that Traditional Plan A ain't workin'. The Happily Ever Afters we write about aren't showing up on our royalty statements. Are we going to sink with the traditional publishing world or swim into a new and very exciting sea of opportunity? And if we're going to shift gears in order to swim into the Epublishing Sea, and make the best of the situation, won't that be a beyond fabulous test of our character?

The WG2E (The Writer’s Guide to/2 E-Publishing) is a work of love. We are each at different stages of our writing careers. D.D. Scott is published exclusively in E-Books using Amazon's DTP Program and Smashwords too. Misa Ramirez / Melissa Bourbon is published in print by huge, traditional publishing houses St. Martin’s Minotaur/Thomas Dunne Books, as well as digitally by Diversion Books. She is also just venturing into the Indie Publishing route. Tonya Kappes is published in print and e-books by a small press, and Lee Lopez is currently un-pubbed but now preparing to go the Indie Pub/E-Pub route.

What a fabulous mix, right?! What fabulous opportunities to compare numbers - real numbers - and the experiences that go along with making those numbers from different road-to-publication paths!

We’ve learned tons through our adventures. Sharing our trials and errors, as well as living out loud on this site, is our way of paying it forward as writers.

I found a fabulous take on how a writer's goals must change because of our ever-changing publishing industry, and I just had to share pieces of it with you!

Joe says:

But it's not only that I agree, I'm acting on Joe and I's beliefs by co-founding The WG2E - The Writer's Guide to E-Publishing!

That's right...me and my partners - Tonya Kappes, Misa Ramirez and L. A. Lopez - are taking chances, doing things we may be a bit afraid of and things we've never tried before so that y'all have a new, go-to-source for all-things-Epublishing.

The WG2E officially launches January 1st at http://thewritersguidetoepublishing.com but feel free to stop by, keeping in mind that we're still adding content and fine-tuning all the features between now and then. Look for my official welcome and launch message on January 1st!

So in this way then, The WG2E is a Konrath-style "pioneer".

Here's the scoop straight from Joe:

I Will Be A Pioneer. Remember the old saying about how to recognize a pioneer? They're the one with the arrows in their backs and fronts.

I've tried to be forward-thinking in my career, rather than being content with my role as a cog in a broken machine. Your best chance for longevity is to question everything, test boundaries, experiment with new ideas, and be willing to change your mind and learn from your mistakes.

Your job is to survive, by any means necessary. So pull out the arrows and forge ahead. Discover the difference between determination and stupidity by being an example for one or the other or both.

Q: What do you call a wary pioneer? A: Still alive.

At the WG2E, we're Paying It Forward with forward-thinking and by testing boundaries as well as creating new boundaries...and we're taking y'all along for the ride!

Sweet Serendipity, My 2011 Year of The E-Book Adventure, & The WG2E

It's almost 2011, and boy-oh-boy does that mean bigger-than-big, new adventures in D. D. Scott-ville!!!

Last week I christened 2011 as The Year of the E-Book and Cross-Pollination and told you I'd be sharing the details.

Well...here are a few of the details...

E-Books are sooo here to stay! And for that very reason, the Publishing Industry has been turned on its huge head!!! Which means a writer's personal life and his or her business life will never again be the same!

Here's one take on that Brave New World from amazing author Robert Walker (as interviewed by my Go-To-Guy J. A. Konrath on his blog http://jakonrath.blogspot.com/2010/12/interview-with-robert-w-walker.html :

Rob: I found this so serendipitous that a story chockfull of technology and science fiction is being self-pubbed. In fact, my last five booklength works, one a how-to, have been Kindle original titles.

I say serendipitous because my dream as a writer had always been to publish as I produce – no nine month gestation period, no year and a half wait for print, but pubbed the day after completion, hot off the brain. Technology in the real world has caught up to my dreams...

Rob: The novel is meant to cut across time, space, and genres or pigeon holds and traditional publishing holes. The novel has more layers than an onion, and as they are peeled away it falls into place like a puzzle in two time zones—past and future. Drink up. You’ll need it, Joe.

Robert Walker is an "old friend" of Joe's who Joe (aka J. A. Konrath) helped earlier this year get his backlist of 30+ out-of-print novels onto Kindle.

Walker now has a new ebook out...Titanic 2012 – Curse of RMS Titanic...which I just downloaded onto my Kindle, not because any of Walker's genres are my thing...but the story just sounded so damn intriguing, and I'm paying it forward by downloading writers who've had the courage, like I have, of going the E-Book route.

Bitchy Sign ala Maxine & The Stealing Christmas Game

This little Maxine gem should get us off on the right path as I teach you one of my favorite Christmas Games - The Stealing Christmas Game!

And now for The Stealing Christmas Game! Here's how it works:

***Note: You must have a family that's not a bunch of prim and proper, nicety-nice people. If ya got that kinda clan, the game ain't gonna work. You've gotta be blessed with several real witches and jerks to share this kinda luuuvvv. LOL!!!

Okay...so here's how to play:

1. Each person invited to your family Christmas festivities should bring a wrapped gift (either from their basement Maxine-style or in the $10 - $15 range or whatever dollar amount y'all choose) without a name on it.

2. Put the gifts under your tree.

3. Make slips of paper with the number of people you have and have each person draw a number from your favorite hat or bowl

4. The person drawing the #1 will rule this game. So whoever has #1, gets to go both first and last in this game, and soon you'll see why.

5. #1 person picks his or her choice of gift from under the tree, un-wraps it for all to see then sits like a nervous twit and waits for #2 to rear his or her nasty head.

6. #2 can either "Steal" #1's gift or choose to pick one of the other gifts under the tree...keeping in mind he or she must make the decision before picking a gift from under the tree and un-wrapping it. So, to get this straight...#2 either Steals #1's gift first and passes on his or shot under the tree of additional gifts OR lets #1 keep his or her gift and goes for any other package they want under the tree. Then #2, like #1, un-wraps the gift for all to see (if they've gone back under the tree).

7. #3 can then "Steal" #1 or #2's gift or let 'em both keep their gifts and take their shot under the tree...again, un-wrapping the gem if it came from under the tree

8. Get it so far?! See why this won't work if you're family is too damn nice?! LOL!!!

9. Now this goes on until the last gift is taken from under the tree.

10. And here's why you sooo want to be #1...'cause when you're all done, #1 can "steal" any gift they want from anyone else since he or she was the poor sucker who had to go first!!!

How fun is this game?!

B. Buy something you won't mind keeping for yourself and hope you get a chance to steal it back!!!

Nashville TN homebuilder Damian Baker is screwed and not in the construction sense of the word. Who would have thought the first room he’d be designing and building for his dream home would be a nursery...for his and Audrey’s twins? But he’s hell-bent on providing well for and protecting the woman he loves plus the children he can’t wait to meet.
