Tchotchke Call-Out
I've been gearing up to get my name and brand out there...taking my D. D. Scott Sexy, Sassy, Smart Stories' Marketing Plan into big-time splash mode. And I need your help.
What kind of tchotchkes would you find irresistible?
In other words, what trinket would be a fabulous, must-have freebie you'd be thrilled to take home?
Here's an example: I'm designing a Sexy, Sassy, Smart Stress-Relief Squeeze Ball with my name, brand, and URL.
How about bookmarks? Notepads? Coffee mugs? Fancy pens and pencils with boot and/or stiletto tops?
Any of these hitting 'fabulous' and 'irrisistible' to you?
Remember, they're all free...a way to connect you with me and my books and give you a bit of something fun to brighten your day.

I say coffee mugs. I can always use a good cup of coffe to go along with reading. By the way: what is Tchotchke??

What's not to love about a big 'ole hot chocolate or a wonderful hot tea? Now the tea tastes fabulous with a bit of honey too.
So far the mugs seem to be a hit...and perhaps a notepad too...
What do you think about the Sexy, Sassy, Smart Stress-Relief Ball...you know, those great suqeeze balls you can annihilate between your fingers or throw at something or someone who deserves it? LOL!!!

I like mugs, but everyone has one. I have a bunch of ones I got with someone's name or logo on them but I drink every day out of my favorite hand-made art mug. I love having note pads in the shape of lists (to do, to get lists). But neither of these convey anything about sexy or sassy. How about something that makes a woman feel sexy or sassy - like a small sized perfumed lotion or a lip gloss?
I also have learned that when you pick something, it should be something that the person getting it will see every day and not just give to their kid. A squeeze ball will go to a kid. A notepad (although I love them) will get used. A trinket designed specifically to sit in front of a woman's computer screen is great because she'll look at it every day. Something to remind her "you know, you're a very sexy, sassy something." Don't go with a magnet or a notepad that sticks on a fridge. Anyone with a stainless steel kitchen will find it useless. Here's what you don't want to do - spend $ like our local grocery store did in a tchotchke to give to folks the first time they have groceries delivered from their online service. They sent an 8 1/2 x 11 size plastic whiteboard grocery list with magnets on the back so you can stick it on your fridge. First off, who has the space on their fridge to put an 8 1/2 x 11 sized list on thier fridge (unless it's getting near your b-day or anniversary and your DH is dense)? Plus, a lot of kitchens are stainless and magnets don't stick (great BTW because it ended the kids artwork over every inch cluttering up my kitchen.) And, really, if I'm going to write a grocery list, wouldn't it be better to write it on paper that I could fold and take with me to the store so I don't forget anything? I for one find it highly unlikely that I'd be walking around the grocery store with a plastic whiteboard. Anyway, I digress.
I really think, DD, you should decide on something that conveys your message and will stay with the person who receives it.
D.D., I've heard that notebooks and pens are popular. Mugs? Sure!
Bookmarks are always popular (and economical), and I love the squeeze ball idea, too. It's really up to you and your budget.

You definitely hit one over the Green Monster with your whiteboard story! LOL!!! There's nothing sexy, sassy, smart about that beast.
I agree with you that tchotchkes should be all about your brand. I actually was thinking about a lip gloss but worried about people's skin sensitivities. An allergic reaction would be anything but sexy, sassy, smart...ugh!

Bookmarks are a definite go. I plan to use them to both promote my brand as well as announce my release schedules.
Glad to hear my stress ball hit home with you. They make such a sassy and smart gadget to pummel anyone near you who needs it. Plus, they're good for relieving the stress on our typing hands.

I had one from a publisher promoting a book series and used it until it wore out--books, beach and gym gear, groceries, lap top... I got so many inquiries wondering where I got the bag from. As plastic bags get abolished, canvas ones will be used more often. Plus, you get points for being forward-thinking and "green".

Marie will be thrilled to know that the "D.D. Scott Bag" is already in the works. I bought a gorgeous, huge bag and am having it hand-painted with my name, brand, and URL. I'll be carrying it everywhere.
The tchotchkes we're deciding on will be the freebies I hand out to people who see the bag and inquire about it...fun stuff!!!

J said... I like the squeeze-ball idea, but I think you need to have something, say, to put on your computer work space, so it is a constant reminder-----maybe a pink photo holder (with the stick-like clip, that is a heart-shaped, of course).
