Reader Poll Results: Where Do You Buy Your Books and Ebooks?

Yesterday, on my grog – The WG2E – I shared an interesting observation I made Tuesday, while shopping at one of our local Target stores…
The scoop, in a nutshell...our Target store moved the print books section to the back of the store. And I mean in the boonies back of the store...behind the toys!!! I couldn’t even find it until after I’d asked if they still had it!!!

Time For a Short-Shorts, Shorts & Novella Show & Tell

Yesterday, at my grog The Naked Hero, we had a super-fun discussion regarding
Show & Tell Us About Your Short-Shorts, Shorts, & Novellas
And, I wanted to bring this inquiry to D. D. Scott-ville too!
First off, I'm not talking about these Short-Shorts

And yes, I’m aging myself...but anyhoo...LOL...
When I say Show & Tell Us About Your Short-Shorts, Shorts & Novellas, I’m talkin’ about the lengths of those stories you’re reading that aren’t full-length novels.
Now, when I researched the definitions and word counts of each of these story formats, given our tremendously changing publishing world, I of course found nothing remotely definitive as far as answers. But here are some basic guidelines (from Wikipedia):
Short-Shorts = anything less than 1000 words
Short Stories = 7000 – 9000 words to some and anywhere from 1000 – 20,000 to others
Novellas = 17,500 – 40,000 words or anywhere from 10,000 – 70,000
Novels = 65,000 words and up
Told ya…no dice on definitive numbers, right?
But really…who cares?!
All that matters are that we’re getting fantabulous books and hopefully for fantabulous prices too, right?!
So...here’s where I need your help, D. D. Scott-ville Readers and Fans...
What kinds of fantabulous short-shorts, shorts and novellas are you E-reading lately? Who are the amazing authors? And how much are you paying for these Ebooks?
I’m asking because I’m about to do something quite unique with my new, Cozy Cash Mysteries, which debut mid-May with THUG GUARD.
So far...I’ve treated y’all to three of my Bootscootin’ Books for less than the price of one, traditionally pubbed, Agency Model priced paperback book. (In other words, buying my entire series of Bootscootin’ Books, which includes three books, each between novella and novel length, now costs $6.97 versus one, traditionally pubbed paperback at around $7.99 for either the Ebook or Print version.)
Now...as my Bootscootin’ Books get a Cozy Mystery twist - with my new Cozy Cash Mystery Series – tell me this...
What would you say to Cozy Cash Mystery Shorts (that are actually more novella-length by the above definition)...all for 99 Cents each?
RomCom-Cozy Shorts, if you will...or to say it another way, romantic comedies with a chick lit, gone-country twist – now turned cozy-short twist – as in a Cozy-Short Mystery Series…
The theory being, you’d get great, novella-length, LOL cozy mysteries, for a great price of 99 Cents, and anywhere from six to ten new stories a year versus two or three full-length novels.

Kristen Lamb - My Go-To Social Media Queen!!!
Hello to all in D. D. Scott-ville!
I'm very excited to share my latest E-Book Country Experiment!!!
An it begins with the ever-fabulous Kristen Lamb and her must-read social media guide:

I actually "met" Kristen on Twitter, and have been a huge, huge fan ever since.
She has single-handedly made me feel like not quite as big of a Techno Dunce as I really am!
Her beyond terrific Warrior Writers Blog is also a must-read, and the WE ARE NOT ALONE book...well, let's just say, I do firmly believe that it is one of the main reasons I'm selling so well as a debut Indie Epubbed Author!!!
For example, just this last week, I read in WE ARE NOT ALONE how to use Kristen's "Poaching" Method - but poaching in a positive, all-together legal and fun way - to build new audiences for my books, and wow oh wow is it working!!!
To "poach" your audience, you use the fabulous Search Function on Twitter and identify groups of people to follow based on topics that relate to your books.
Here's how I used Kristen's method:

Since doing this "poaching" for about a week now, I've increased my social media following on not just Twitter but on Facebook too by between 50 and 60 followers and friends on each platform. In addition, I've sold another 25+ books!!!
But the best part...
I've got a ton of new virtual friends who are now leading me to all new resources and communities as well!!!

Behind & Beyond My Books: BUCKLES ME BABY & Cozy Mystery Cross-Pollination
I luuuvvv goin' Behind & Beyond My Books - giving y'all the inside scoop on how the ideas take shape for each book I write.
And I haven't done that for awhile.
So here we go Behind & Beyond My Books with BUCKLES ME BABY - Book Three in my Bootscootin' Books Series.
BUCKLES ME BABY will be released on Kindle and Smashwords this Valentine's Day!!!
I don't have the Book Cover yet...but as soon as I do, I'll share it with you!!! But, in the mean time, I do luuuvvv this graphic my fabulous cover designer created to use 'til the actual cover is finished.
Anyhoo...about the BUCKLES ME BABY book...here's a teaser:
Think paparazzi-hell and Ponzi-scheme fall-out meet home-shopping and Babies “R” Us.
Manhattan-raised, marketing and promotion impresario Audrey Holtz has taken her friend’s belt buckles from Music City boutique favorites to home shopping channel wait-list-only items. But she’s traded in her high-power stilettos for Sketchers ‘cause her feet are swollen and killing her. Pregnancy is a bitch, especially when you’ve assumed a false identity to dodge paparazzi on account of your Madoff-style, Ponzi-scheming parents.
Nashville TN homebuilder Damian Baker is screwed and not in the construction sense of the word. Who would have thought the first room he’d be designing and building for his dream home would be a nursery...for his and Audrey’s twins? But he’s hell-bent on providing well for and protecting the woman he loves plus the children he can’t wait to meet.
Audrey and Damian may not be able to hide from the camera lenses, the baby blues, and belt buckle mania, although they can hide behind their love. But is their love strong enough to deflect the blinding glare of the spotlight?
I call BUCKLES ME BABY a Romantic Comedy-Cozy...as it's a hybrid cross of the romantic comedy genre and the cozy mystery genre.
And as you may know from my previous blog posts, 2011 is all about hybrid crosses here in D. D. Scott-ville...or what J. A. Konrath and I call Cross-Pollination.
Cross-Pollination is taking characters and elements from one story in a particular genre and putting them into a completely different genre. And it's a brilliant way to treat your readers to a new genre that maybe they've never read before but will enjoy because they love the characters and elements you've crossed-over into that new genre.
So yeah...BUCKLES ME BABY is a Romantic Comedy-Cozy.
And here's how I've done it...
BUCKLES ME BABY includes the following fabulous characters and elements (many of whom and which you've met in my first two Bootscootin' Books - BOOTSCOOTIN' BLAHNIKS and STOMPIN' ON STETSONS):
*** The Mom Squad (ohhh yeahhh...these bad ass, middle-aged plus bitches are back and in wayyy over their somewhat blue-haired heads)
*** Roxy, Jules and Audrey (my three Bootscootin' Book heroines)
*** Zayne, Cody and Damian (the hotter-than-hot cowboy heroes that complete my three wanna be cowgirl heroines)
 
*** A Bernie Madoff Ponzi-scheme style twist (that I'll cross-pollinate...there's that word again...into my Cozy Cash Mysteries that debut this Spring)
*** Paparazzi from Hell
*** And why just have one baby on the way...why not two?! Yep...Audrey and Damian are having twins in the midst of their chaos
*** Okay...here's where the Cross-Pollination really kicks in...BUCKLES ME BABY introduces super U. S. Marshals Zoey Witherspoon and Roman Scagnoli (well...actually, Roman is a for-real Marshal, and Zoey is a wanna-be...but whatever...that's just a minor detail). Anyhoo...It's Zoey and Roman's job to protect my quirky-crazy cast of characters then take themselves...oh, and The Mom Squad too...into my new Cozy Cash Mystery books.

I'm ecstatic with my sales numbers, and I'm thrilled to share 'em with you at The WG2E.
Keep in mind when you're reviewing my numbers that unlike the traditional publishing world of old where you had to have a huge push by a major publisher to sell well, I didn't have that.
I'm totally self-made via Indie Epublishing.
And I'm here to tell you - then show you how - it can be done.
I'm right on track - as you'll see comparing my numbers to other Bestselling Indie Authors - to selling my own multiple thousands of Ebooks by the end of 2011.
How?
By making some of the same tough but great decisions that they did too! (More on that in future posts both here and at The WG2E.)

The WG2E's Real Numbers Series: Putting Epublishing Numbers Into Perspective

In January of 2010, I had one book on Kindle and sold 31 copies. I had two print books on the market with a small publisher, and they weren’t selling much better. The WG2E (The Writer’s Guide to/2 E-Publishing) is a work of love. We are each at different stages of our writing careers. D.D. Scott is published exclusively in E-Books using Amazon's DTP Program and Smashwords too. Misa Ramirez / Melissa Bourbon is published in print by huge, traditional publishing houses St. Martin’s Minotaur/Thomas Dunne Books, as well as digitally by Diversion Books. She is also just venturing into the Indie Publishing route. Tonya Kappes is published in print and e-books by a small press, and Lee Lopez is currently un-pubbed but now preparing to go the Indie Pub/E-Pub route.
What a fabulous mix, right?! What fabulous opportunities to compare numbers - real numbers - and the experiences that go along with making those numbers from different road-to-publication paths!
We’ve learned tons through our adventures. Sharing our trials and errors, as well as living out loud on this site, is our way of paying it forward as writers.

E-Book Country: A Writer's Goals Must Change with the Ever-Changing Publishing Industry

I found a fabulous take on how a writer's goals must change because of our ever-changing publishing industry, and I just had to share pieces of it with you!

That's right...me and my partners - Tonya Kappes, Misa Ramirez and L. A. Lopez - are taking chances, doing things we may be a bit afraid of and things we've never tried before so that y'all have a new, go-to-source for all-things-Epublishing.
The WG2E officially launches January 1st at http://thewritersguidetoepublishing.com but feel free to stop by, keeping in mind that we're still adding content and fine-tuning all the features between now and then. Look for my official welcome and launch message on January 1st!
So in this way then, The WG2E is a Konrath-style "pioneer".

I Will Be A Pioneer. Remember the old saying about how to recognize a pioneer? They're the one with the arrows in their backs and fronts.
I've tried to be forward-thinking in my career, rather than being content with my role as a cog in a broken machine. Your best chance for longevity is to question everything, test boundaries, experiment with new ideas, and be willing to change your mind and learn from your mistakes.
Your job is to survive, by any means necessary. So pull out the arrows and forge ahead. Discover the difference between determination and stupidity by being an example for one or the other or both.
Q: What do you call a wary pioneer? A: Still alive.
At the WG2E, we're Paying It Forward with forward-thinking and by testing boundaries as well as creating new boundaries...and we're taking y'all along for the ride!

Sweet Serendipity, My 2011 Year of The E-Book Adventure, & The WG2E

It's almost 2011, and boy-oh-boy does that mean bigger-than-big, new adventures in D. D. Scott-ville!!!
Last week I christened 2011 as The Year of the E-Book and Cross-Pollination and told you I'd be sharing the details.
Well...here are a few of the details...
E-Books are sooo here to stay! And for that very reason, the Publishing Industry has been turned on its huge head!!! Which means a writer's personal life and his or her business life will never again be the same!

Rob: I found this so serendipitous that a story chockfull of technology and science fiction is being self-pubbed. In fact, my last five booklength works, one a how-to, have been Kindle original titles.
I say serendipitous because my dream as a writer had always been to publish as I produce – no nine month gestation period, no year and a half wait for print, but pubbed the day after completion, hot off the brain. Technology in the real world has caught up to my dreams...

Robert Walker is an "old friend" of Joe's who Joe (aka J. A. Konrath) helped earlier this year get his backlist of 30+ out-of-print novels onto Kindle.
Walker now has a new ebook out...Titanic 2012 – Curse of RMS Titanic...which I just downloaded onto my Kindle, not because any of Walker's genres are my thing...but the story just sounded so damn intriguing, and I'm paying it forward by downloading writers who've had the courage, like I have, of going the E-Book route.

DD Scott's second book, Stompin' on Stetsons is a fun holiday read. True to romantics everywhere, the good girl gets the good guy and they have a rosy future - that in itself makes it worthy. But for me, I actually fell in love with the secondary characters and would love to know how their lives turn out!
Aunt Tulip, Grams, Midge make a cast of strong, older women who will do what it takes to keep their families strong, happy, and successful.
I don't know that I could have lived with my own personal Aunt Tulip, sex therapist extraordinaire, but she definitely gave Jules character and background. Grams and Midge gave Cody a great work ethic and gave him great insight into not only older women, but into Jules.
The Nashville DD Scott has created makes me want to get on a plane to go visit and have some fried chicken.
How's that for some fabulous, Squeee-worthy news?!
If you only knew how beyond terrified I've been to actually seek-out Reviews! Talk about a huge, huge hurdle!
And here I'm the one always saying to "Go for the gusto" and "be a gutsy romance writer girl". But let me tell ya somethin'...it ain't easy puttin' your work out there to be "reviewed" for its merit and number of stars rankings.
But I finally did it!
And for that I'm happy dancin' today!!!
Now I'm not naive and thinking that this first review means all the other ones will make me feel like dancin'. Oh no.
But I've got Queen Nora - yes, as in the super-fabulous Nora Roberts - to help me with that. Nora had this to say about Reviews during her RWA10 Keynote Luncheon Address:
"Reader A still loves what Reader B thinks is crap."
Then she went on to say about writing-for-publication in general:
"Publication is wild wicked with nose-dive, near miss rejections...Suck it up! Hard is what makes it special...But we are writers. That's what we do!"

Fasten your seat belts, 'cause you're about to be "on the DARC Road" to E-Book Sales' Oz!!!
Remember last week I first told you about a DARC = Digital Advanced Reader Copy.
And remember too that I told you one of my goals is to do for the Romance and Cozy Mystery Genre what the super fabulous JA Konrath (http://www.jakonrath.com) has done for first the Mystery Genre, now Thrillers and soon for the Sci-Fi World as well...and that is...buck the traditional-publishing, business models in favor of the much more author-viable and author-successful E-Book non-traditional publishing routes.

On Tuesday, October 19th, Konrath's latest thriller DRACULAS (co-written with several other fabulous thriller authors) went live on Amazon, and within 24 hours of it going live, they had 120 reviews and went to #76 on the Paid Kindle Bestseller List.
How did they do it?
By using the power of bloggers and reviewers!!!
You see...Konrath had learned from his previous marketing experiences with his many, many Kindle releases that an author can greatly raise his or her Amazon rankings by getting on as many blogs as possible as well as by getting as many reviews as possible.
And Konrath got reviewers and bloggers by calling 'em out on his blog by exchanging their review for a FREE E-Book DARC!
So it worked for Konrath's DRACULAS...let's see if we all can make it work for the Romance Genre too!!!

E-Book Country Experiment Starts Next Week!!!
Ohhh yeahhh...it's almost the weekend!
